Introduction Post

 

Hello, my name Rachel Chapman, and I currently live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I am majoring in Art History and hope to be a museum curator, or work in a local gallery at first. I do worry about the future of museums after the pandemic and their audience attendance, but most hopeful that museum will recover and offer something new and “normal”. When I am at school, I volunteer at the Manitou Art Center. On my down time, I have been enjoying watching Naruto. Guy Might is my favorite character and my hero because of his positive attitude and his stick-to-itiveness. It is a characteristic that I would love to have and introduce myself to the world.

Photograph is one of my least knowledgeable art topics that I know. So, I am nervous and happy to be learning about photography. What I love about photography is the moment it capture and the ability to offer the viewer something they have never seen before. The photography that I choose to share is the photo of a pigeon sitting down like a human. What stands out to me for this it show me something that I never thought of or had the creativity to even think about.

    Hello!

    I agree with you on photography, it is definitely one form of art that I am least knowledgeable on so it is exciting to be able to learn more about it! I also like the photo that you chose to share, I have never seen a bird of any sort sit just like a human. Thank you for sharing!

Reading Response: Social Justice and Inclusion in Musuems

     Museums are a public institution, where all should feel welcomed in participating in what is being provided. Museums have notoriety, there are many museums people have heard of but never been too. Such as the museum of modern art, the metropolitan, Smithsonian, and museums of science. However, museums have a glaring problem that needs to be addressed. Museums are not welcoming all people that are a part of the public forum. In articles like “Inclusion in Museums: A Matter of Social" Justice by Rose Kinsley and " Accountability and Disposal: Visual Impairment and the Museum" by Kevin Hetherington they expose this problem. Social lnjusticed: Decolonization of Museums

  Social Injustice: Topic Proposal Decolonization of the museum’s establishment is the topic proposal I am interested in.   Museums are deep rooted in colonialism. Some museums where started from the profits of slave labor. While some museums excluded indigenous art because the hierarchy of European views on what art is and what art is not.   Decolonization of art museum is not the same as diversity. It is not about exhibitions that are displayed by people that may look different form you. It is about changing the perspective placed on indigenous people not through the eyes of colonizers but through the eyes of the people that the art is about. In addition to giving credit to people of color for their artwork not just labeling it as different.
