Introducation Post

Hello, my name is Rachel Chapman and I am an art major studying at Colorado State Universtiy- Pueblo. This is my first year at Pueblo my higer education started at Pikes Peak Community College. And I beilve that everyone should start at a community college because it was amazing and cheaper. The plan that I have with my degree once I earn it, is to join the FBI through there art divsion.

Growing up my experience with mueseum was to admire them with awe. I had the notion that museums were for fancy people and it was my goal to become one of those fancy people. To roam through the musem in the classic black dress drinking red wine and using big words to express my opinion on an art piece. The sad part about my initial concept that I had over museums was I never felt good enough to actually go to a musuem. Even today I still feel the need to put together a whole outfit to show that I belong there. While reading La Tanya S. Autry and Mike Murawski, " Museums Are Not Neutral: We Are Stronger Togther" comfired the feeling that I have towards musuems. Museums are built for the, "elitists"and further prove that they are raicst and sexist. I agree a conversation is needed to allow others to participate on the topic of, who are women and people of color? The whole word is missing out on art and culture from this unique prespective.

  1. Hey Rachel, I just posted to your other blog post and then came back and read your intro. I just wanted to say that I feel your sentiment of not belonging to the museum culture and I like your idealistic nature that you wanted to dress classy to fit in and be sophisticated. I think there is a little bit of that in all of us, but what is sad is feeling like you have to be rich and white to fit in. We've not been made to feel that people like us can feel like we're welcome. I am Hispanic but look pretty white so I haven't experienced a lot of racial discrimination, but I feel it anyway because I've been "poor" by societies standards. I hope that someday we will walk into the Guggenhiem and it will feel like home! I hope you enjoy CSUP as much as I have the last two years!
